The Power Of Asymmetric Experience Design – Artist Talk at AMAZE. Digital Playground/gamescom

“The Power of Asymmetric Experience Design: How Mixed-Reality Dance Performances Lead to Love Letters“

Artist Talk at AMAZE. Digital Playground at gamescom on August, 24th 2024

In her talk, Anna-Carolin explores how asymmetric interactions increase user engagement, foster unique collaborations and offer new perspectives on embodied experiences. Using examples from our mixed reality performances “I Spy With My Little Eye – Duets for One Head and Two Hands” (2022), “Beautiful Connection: A Social Performance Training” (2023) and “Hybrid Encounters – A Virtual Reality Dance Experience” (2024), she shows how 250+ mixed-reality dance performances composed with an asymmetric experience design approach resulted in an overwhelmingly positive audience response of 200+ handwritten feedback letters.

Anna-Carolin discusses how our pieces play with control and co-agency in an asymmetric design approach that creates mixed reality experiences with engaging setups that navigate uncertainty/security, safety/risk, and activity/passivity. She will share insights into bringing people together on different levels of their senses, creating deeper connections through artificial obstacles, while understanding the moving body itself as a multi-sensory input/output tool.

Finally, the audience will take part in a short practical try-out in which the principles of asymmetrical experience design will be tried out together. The session will conclude with a short discussion: How can digital tools be deconstructed and reinterpreted to enable an intensive connection in hybrid encounters between virtual reality and contemporary dance?
