Hybrid Encounters

“Hybrid Encounters – A Virtual Reality Dance Experience” (2024)

Hybrid Encounters builds a bridge between archive, performance and exhibition. Putting on the VR headset opens the door to over 235 dance encounters. These were collected throughout Germany as 3-D scores of performances and are archived as virtual dance sculptures. In Hybrid Encounters visitors are invited to experience selected scores spatially in VR, to walk through them and to embody them through dance.

Invisible sculptures and virtual movement traces of past dance duets gradually become visible through the embodied movements of two visitors gathered in the foyer of Berlin’s HAU2 theater, participating in the VR dance experience Hybrid Encounters. As an observer, my attention shifts back and forth between the pair, each captivating me with their focused yet flowing gestures. One participant wears VR goggles, seamlessly transitioning between expansive, spatial steps and fluid, serpentine arm movements on the marked dance floor. The second visitor accompanies this dance, sketching on paper –but notably never looking directly at their drawing. Instead, their gaze remains fixed upon their partner’s movements. The dynamics of the dancer’s gestures resonate visibly through the drawing visitor’s right hand, causing the paper to fill with continuous, meandering lines that gradually overlay brief, rapid strokes. I close my eyes briefly, hearing only the subtle squeak of a shoe sole gliding across the floor, perhaps a spin, and then silence so profound that I clearly hear the soft scratching of the felt-tip pen. When I reopen my eyes, the dancer lies on their back, arms extended upward, fingers gently tracing delicate, invisible patterns in mid-air.

The latest work in the trilogy merges archive, performance, and exhibition into one continuous, immersive format. More than 235 digital movement sculpturescaptured during earlier I Spy With My Little Eye duets – form the living archive that drives the piece. In theatre foyers, gallery spaces and festival contexts, pairs of visitors wear VR headsets and headphones and enter a dark, otherwise invisible environment where luminous, floating sculptures surround them. Over 12-15 minutes they explore, touch, and respond to these traces, generating fresh layers of movement and dialogue.
